COLLECTING ARTIFACTS

SURFACE COLLECTING
š A treasure hunt with no maps, a lot of HOPE,
FRESH AIR and EXERCISE, a wonderful way to relax and enjoy nature.
A great family activity, there is no age barrier, and it is gender neutral,
have you ever meant a Kid not interested in Indians?
I NEVER had a bad day relic hunting, and have no way to explain the feeling
of making a find, a small piece of history lost or discarded long ago.
Although I have been to many sites without any great discoveries and walked many, many miles and only brought home a bag of trash and maybe a few flakes or cores. It's like hunting anything, the prey can be very elusive, but may turn up anywhere if your looking. I have found points and other tools in parking lots, flowerbeds and trucked in fill, places where hundreds of people walk every day. Once you find a point (a natural mood elevator) your hooked, and will want more, you may be able to fight the urge or you may just succumb to it and end up collecting the rest of your life! Some of use are Born Hooked, I know I was (on relics that is). My Friend John Kohr always said it's like drugs, VERY Addictive and can become Very Expensive! But if you stick to surface collecting, respect others property and obey the laws, it's one of the cheapest pastimes going, a Drug Free Stress Reliever with Educational Side Affects.

BUYING, SELLING, and TRADING
The only way possible for most to
acquire a great collection. I suggest buying only what you really like,
and the best quality you can afford.
Also a great way to meet, and share with others ofš common interest.
Relic collectors always have something to talk about, and that has lead to many
 a life long friendship.

BUYER BEWARE! MANY GREAT DEALS AREN'T, THERE IS A LOT OF
COUNTERFEIT ON THE MARKET, BE AN INFORMED COLLECTOR,
KNOW WHAT YOUR BUYING,š AND WHO YOUR DEALING WITH !
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, ASK QUESTIONS, GET RECEIPTS,
AND A RETURN GUARANTEE IN WRITING.
AND WHEN IN DOUBT HAVE IT CHECKED BY A REPUTABLE AUTHENTICATOR.

š
There are FEDERAL, and STATE LAWS
THAT RESTRICT collecting, TRADING, and even POSSESSION of RELICS.
These LAWS differ greatly STATE to STATE, Please Check LAWS LINK.

DON'T TRESPASS.š ALWAYS get permission BEFORE You enter anyone
else's land, and leave only your foot prints. I Always carry a bag for Litter,
I Hate Litter Bugs!!! But no matter who Tossed it,
LET'S PICK IT UP, IT'S OUR EARTH!
I have been invited back to many fields only because the owner saw that I was not only respecting his property but picking up trash as I searched, something never expected and it leaves a lasting impression!

TIPS
BUY YOURSELF A LOUPE, (10X Works Well)
AND MAGNIFY EVERY RELIC YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON.
COMPAREš AUTHENTIC WITH KNOWN COPY'S.
HEARTBREAKERS ARE PERFECT FOR REFERENCE.
THE NEW, AND OLD, HAVE SUBTLE DIFFERENCES
( MOST OF THE TIME ).
MANY THINGS ESCAPE THE NAKED EYE. MOST COPY'S, AND FAKES,
HAVE TELLTALE SIGNS ALL OVER THEM, HINGE FRACTURES,
SANDPAPER MARKS, NO DIRT OR PATINA WHERE THERE SHOULD BE.
METAL TRACE MARKS FROMš MODERN KNAPPING TOOLS, AND MORE.
THE CLOSER YOU LOOK THE MORE YOU WILL SEE.
AND YOU CAN CARRY A LOUPE EVERYWHERE, IT MAKES THE FAKERS
VERY NERVOUS, THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO LOOK THAT CLOSE.

ANOTHER Reasonability Priced tool is A Quality UV Light, when used Properly its Great for Detecting newly Chipped, Ground, Glued and Restored Pieces.
It Takes Patience & Practice, but its well Worth the Time to learn.
Please don't buy a Cheap Black Light, it won't Work.

For the More Advanced Collector a Quality Microscope has become a Must,
Stereo Zoom with a Wide Field View is Best
And you can get Quality Without Blowing your Budget.
I Got a used Scope on Ebay, Bausch & Lomb  Military Surplus
for a very Reasonable Price.

NOTE A Word To The Wise: Ebay Was Once a Great Place, Bargains can be Had, But Check Sellers Feedback, Read Description Carefully and ASK Questions Before Bidding, Ebay Has Become a Thieves Market And I Would Guess at Least 90% of The Current Artifacts Are FAKE. Ebay is Now a Very Unfriendly Place, The High Fees and New Policies Have Push Out Many of The Reliable Sellers SO PLEASE DO BE CAREFUL!
Feedback is no Guarantee, but Often Tells the Type of Person your Dealing With.
If the Description seems Vague, Pictures Are Dark & or Blurry,  NO Return is Offered,
or they Don't answer your Email when you Attempt to Ask. DON'T BID!
AND Remember AS IS Usually Means JUNK.
The Habitual Sellers of Fake Artifacts will Often Make the Description Long and Glorified having no actual connection with the piece being sold, making claims of museum quality, rare, offering of a lifetime, none better. While buried deep in description they may give a brief description of the item for sale along with selling for a friend and since I didn't find it I am listing as Modern but it looks good bla bla bla. They do their best to muddy up the water, just like the barker at a side show. And don't be deceived by a half hearted guarantee, 3 days is common with these sellers if any is offered at all and you cant claim anything as to not Authentic, The Description was MODERN, They Told you So!

Look at the other Pieces they are selling, do all the pieces look like the same material, do some look slightly off or completely Unlike anything you have seen before, don't fool yourself, They Know Exactly What They are Selling. They may have good feedback because they pray on new collectors and you may not find out it's Fake till long after they have Run with Your Cash in hand. Most seasoned collectors have been burned at least once and even the best Authenticators can be fooled, it's rare but it has happened, as we get better at authentication They get better at counterfeiting, right down to a Great Patina.

It was estimated years ago that only one in a hundred artifacts on the market are truly Authentic and this estimate has probably been fare exceeded because there is a huge demand for quality high priced relics, with the crooks it's easy money because the demand is so high and there are so many uninformed collectors, educate yourself and save your money!

THE Newest Deception Many Ebay Sellers are using is to make the claim that they
believe the item is authentic but since Ebay is tightening up on sales of possible Grave
and Cave Goods and Canceling Auctions They are Forced to List in Modern Category.
This is Absolutely FALSE, Just another LIE.
You can find many Authentic Relics in Ancient Categories and if you want a Guarantee
just add AACA to your search for a minimum 14 day Unconditional Return,
Most AACA Members will also allow extra Time if you wish to send to a Reputable  Authenticator.

ALSO NOTE: Certificates of Authenticity are also Being Counterfeited, People are Copying Genuine Certificates From Long Time Reputable Authenticators and Forging Signatures. Still Others will Authenticate Anything You Send Them, But They Don't Have Any Qualifications, it's Just Their Opinion. So be Advised,
Never Buy The Paper Buy The Artifact.

And when in Doubt I Suggest using a REPUTABLE AUTHENTICATOR,
Money well Spent, Good Paper usually adds Value, and Piece of Mind.
